Africa to America
Somewhere in the African past,
before the guns, before the shackles,
before the kidnappings of story-tellers and sky-readers, musicians, dancers, doctors, sculptors, teachers, planters, hunters, historians, mothers, fathers and children, before all that, there were women who caught the babies and guided them into the world, with gentle, loving hands.

You Look So Much Better When You SMILE
First, a huge “thank you” to the KinderSmile Foundation for partnering with Melanin and Maternal Wellness, Greater Mount Zion CDC, and the Trenton Housing Authority to provide this essential information and resources! Oral health is also important for perinatal health.
Did you know that perinatal oral health is essential to black maternal health? It's true! Taking care of oral health during pregnancy and after childbirth plays a crucial role in overall well-being.
During pregnancy, hormonal changes can lead to an increased risk of gum disease and tooth decay. This not only affects the mother's oral health but can also have a negative impact on the baby's health. Studies have shown that poor oral health during pregnancy is associated with preterm birth and low birth weight. Furthermore, after giving birth, new mothers often experience changes in their oral health due to factors like breastfeeding, stress, and changes in oral hygiene habits. It's important for these mothers to prioritize their oral health to pre vent any potential complications.By spreading awareness about perinatal oral health, we can empower black mothers to take control of their oral health journey. Regular dental check-ups, proper oral hygiene practices, and a healthy diet are all key elements in maintaining good oral health during this critical period.
Let's promote perinatal oral health as an integral part of black maternal health. Together, we can ensure a healthy smile for both mothers and their little ones!
