More Than Survival

Melanin and Maternal Wellness is a village rooted birth justice organization advancing Black maternal wellness through culturally grounded perinatal support, advocacy, policy education, civic engagement, and healing centered community care.

Grounded in the principles of Birth Justice and Reproductive Justice, our work is built on a simple truth: Black families deserve more than survival within systems that have historically failed to protect us. We deserve dignity. We deserve safety. We deserve culturally responsive care, collective support, and the power to shape the conditions that impact our lives and our births.

Founded from lived experience and transformed through community, Melanin and Maternal Wellness was created to support Black families across the full reproductive journey while confronting the systemic inequities that continue to shape Black maternal health outcomes.

At the heart of our work is care. We provide childbirth education, doula support, breastfeeding and lactation education, maternal wellness programming, advocacy training, community centered support, and culturally rooted resources designed to help Black families feel informed, supported, seen, and empowered throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond.

What began as a platform centering Black motherhood has grown into a multifaceted movement connecting families, birth workers, advocates, policymakers, and community leaders in the fight for birth justice and equitable maternal health outcomes. Through initiatives such as Black Birth on the Ballot™, the Asè Toolkit®, Birth Justice BillTrack™, public education campaigns, legislative advocacy, and strategic partnerships, we bridge lived experience with systems change and civic action.

Because Black maternal health is shaped by more than healthcare alone. It is shaped by housing, economic justice, environmental conditions, reproductive autonomy, access to culturally responsive care, and the systems that determine whether Black communities are able to thrive.

At Melanin and Maternal Wellness, we are building spaces where Black families are heard, protected, supported, and empowered — while helping reimagine what safe, joyful, and fully supported Black birthing experiences can look like for generations to come.
